I’m no stranger to therapy. I have been with therapists, counsellors, psychologists and psychiatrists on and off since 2016. As someone living with high functioning anxiety and clinical depressive disorder along with bipolar personality disorder, there have been times when just functioning as a human being was near impossible and I needed help.What I find lacking in the entire psychology and counselling system in this country is dedication and willingness to go the extra mile. And this is what I have found being fulfilled in Ankita’s therapeutic counseling.What makes a good psychologist or counsellor? Is it the degrees? The many years of experience? The certificates and awards on their walls? No. It’s something much less visible– the intent to help, the power to be accessible and the sole focus to help someone who isstruggling.In Ankita’s style of therapy, this is my favourite thing. I am a difficult person, and even knowing that does not make it easy for me to fix that. But what I have found in Ankita's Sessions are the comfort and safety to be fully me at all times. This is a precious thing for the mentally unwell because not everyone is willing to accept us fully. Another great aspect of her style of therapy is that she works with you to understand how you like to be helped, instead of deciding on her own what will work best and just pushing forward with that. Previously, I have been given CBT by almost every single counsellor/therapist I have worked with, and while I’m not saying it was ineffectual, I will say that just finding the strength to apply CBT in my daily life was incredibly challenging, and Ultimately it made me feel worse. Ankita figured out very early in our time together that CBT was not the right approach for me and changed it to DBT, which has been working much better.Next, I would like to talk about her initiative and encouragement outside of our sessions. She routinely checks in with me to ask how I am doing, especially if I have had a rough week. And I have the freedom to text her when I need to if I feel like I am drowning. Knowing that I have a concerned therapist who is willing to give me a little extra time if I really need it is a great source of comfort for me, and over time I have noticed that just the knowledge is enough to make me feel better.Lastly, I would say Ankita’s best feature as a therapist is her self-awareness. She knows that she is human and so am I and at times this will lead us to behave in certain ways. But she is Always quick to remind me that as a team, we do not need to fight against each other but accept what needs work and work on that together. Trust me when I say that this is a valuable resource to have if you are struggling with mental health, because there will be times when you feel like everyone is your enemy and nobody wants you around.
